About the Conference

Climate change is transforming the landscape of disasters and public health across South-East Asia. Increasing heatwaves, floods, landslides, extreme weather events, and emerging infectious diseases are placing unprecedented pressure on health systems and vulnerable communities.

Nepal, one of the world’s most disaster-prone countries, has made significant progress in shifting from disaster response to disaster risk reduction through its federal governance system and Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) Act. However, strengthening resilient health systems requires stronger collaboration across disciplines, institutions, and countries.

The Nepalese Society of Community Medicine (NESCOM), in collaboration with the RISK-E-SCAPE Project funded by the European Commission, is organising this conference to bring together global and local experts to address today’s most pressing challenges at the intersection of climate change, disasters, and health.

The International Conference on Climate, Disaster and Health: Evidence, Innovation and Resilience provides a unique platform to exchange scientific evidence, showcase innovations, promote policy dialogue, and strengthen partnerships that improve preparedness, response, recovery, and long-term resilience.

In response, generations developed a remarkable form of local knowledge: building homes from wood and corrugated tin, often elevated on posts and light enough to be dismantled, transported, and rebuilt when the river came closer. What began as a practical response to river erosion gradually became more than a survival strategy. The movable wooden house became part of the architectural identity and heritage of Munshiganj. Even where the immediate threat of erosion has changed, the knowledge and tradition remain. This house therefore tells a story beyond architecture. It is evidence of how communities observe their environment, innovate with what they have, and adapt without surrendering their sense of home. For a community living with climate and disaster uncertainty, resilience does not always look like a wall built to hold the river back. Sometimes, it looks like building a home that knows when to move.

A river of life, a witness to change: Both my entries are from prominent rivers of Nepal supporting the environment, the nature and wildlife and the communities that live around their banks. The changes in climate have caused a dramatic shift in the river’s ecosystem causing suffering to the health and livelihoods of the people. We must remember that a river can sustain life, but a changing climate can turn water into both scarcity and disaster. Yet we can also learn from a river which speaks of resilience, the strength in unity of a thousand small drops, and from it’s nature to adapt, innovate and endure.
